Toshi is a secure messaging app, a wallet and a browser for Ethereum apps, built on top of the decentralized Ethereum network.

Banking the unbanked

With smartphones becoming ubiquitous, digital currency has the power to provide financial services to the 2.5 billion people in the developing world who have a phone, but don’t have access to a bank account. Access to financial services is a critical tool for moving people out of poverty. Toshi’s mission is to create a platform that provides access to financial services for people all over the world.

Toshi is available for iOS and Android and has secure messaging and payments built in. Messages are secured through the Signal protocol and every user on Toshi is in control of their own funds; the private key never leaves the user’s device. The built-in reputation system ensures users know if they can trust the person or app they’re dealing with.

A global payment network

Transactions run over Ethereum, which works as a decentralized global value transfer network. This makes it dramatically easier to build and use Ethereum apps on top of Toshi. With digital currency having its ‘Netscape moment’, we are hoping to help shift digital currency from being just a speculative investment to a payment network for useful goods and services.

What started out as a small project run over week-long design sprints quickly evolved into a large team working together to bring financial services to the masses. We designed and developed every part of the Toshi platform.

Coinbase, who initiated the project, stated Toshi is one of the three pillars central to the company going forward. They recently raised $100 million at a $1,6bn valuation.
